How Is a Typing Score Calculated?
The calculator combines your typing speed and accuracy using the following formula:
Typing Score = WPM × (Accuracy ÷ 100)
For example, suppose you type at 60 WPM with 95% accuracy:
60 × 0.95 = 57
Your final typing score would be 57.
A person with a slightly lower WPM but better accuracy may receive a stronger practical score than someone who types quickly with many mistakes.
What Does Your Typing Score Mean?
Use these general ranges to understand your result:
- Below 25: Beginner
- 25–39: Developing
- 40–59: Good
- 60–79: Fast
- 80–99: Advanced
- 100 or higher: Expert
Your score can change depending on the test duration, text difficulty, keyboard, typing accuracy, and number of errors. For a more reliable result, complete several typing tests and compare your average score.
Why Accuracy Affects Your Typing Score
Typing quickly is less useful when the text contains frequent spelling mistakes, missing characters, or incorrect punctuation. Correcting those errors also takes additional time.
An accuracy-adjusted score provides a more balanced measurement of your keyboard skills. It rewards typists who maintain good speed while making fewer mistakes.
Focus on reaching consistent accuracy before trying to increase your WPM.
How to Improve Your Typing Score
Practise typing for a few minutes every day and keep your fingers on the correct home-row keys. Look at the screen instead of the keyboard and slow down when you begin making repeated errors.
You can improve your score by:
- Increasing your typing accuracy
- Reducing incorrect keystrokes
- Learning proper finger placement
- Practising difficult letters and words
- Maintaining a steady typing rhythm
- Gradually increasing your WPM
Take a typing speed test regularly and enter your latest WPM and accuracy into this calculator to monitor your progress.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typing score?
A typing score is a combined measurement of typing speed and accuracy. It provides a more balanced view of typing performance than WPM alone.
What information do I need?
You need your words-per-minute result and typing accuracy percentage. You can get both values by completing an online typing test.
Is typing score the same as WPM?
No. WPM measures how quickly you type, while a typing score adjusts your speed according to your accuracy.
Can two people with the same WPM have different scores?
Yes. The person with higher typing accuracy will receive a better accuracy-adjusted score.
Is a score of 40 good?
A score around 40 represents a useful everyday typing level. However, you should also consider your consistency and the difficulty of the test.
Can I use this calculator for job typing tests?
Yes. You can enter the WPM and accuracy shown in your job typing test result to estimate your overall performance.
Is the typing score calculator free?
Yes. You can calculate your typing score online without registration.
